The tone of the Martin D-28 Acoustic Guitar is what separates it from all other guitars. It has a solid Sitka spruce top with glossy finish, special East Indian rosewood for the polished back and sides, and genuine ebony fingerboard and bridge.
With its rich, resonant warmth and punchy volume, the D-28 is particularly well-suited to music styles requiring loud, powerful rhythm accompaniment. Includes Martin deluxe hardshell case and limited lifetime warranty.

This is a very nice, simply appointed acoustic guitar, with very nice detailing. Position dots are conservative and clean. The fingerboard is ebony and is trimmed with celluloid purfling. The Martin D-28 is known for its' herringbone trim around the top and back edges, which is trimmed with celluloid binding as well.
With the East Indian Rosewood back and sides it gives this guitar more tonal capacity toward the bass sound, while keeping the treble notes loud and clear. The solid spruce top has a nice tight grain pattern with quite finely space lines. There should be at least 16 grain lines/inch and most of the D-28's I've seen meet this criteria.
Gotoh Chrome tuning machines work very smoothly. The combination of ebony fretbaord and bridge along with the black pickguard make for an awesome looking guitar.
The Martin D-28 sound is very even, with loud treble and louder lows than the Mahogany guitars. Does not compare to the old pre-war Martins, but that is not possible by any guitar. This will prove to be a very solid guitar for flat-picking and has a nice "fat" tone for finger style playing.
As far as flatpicking...This is the standard by which other guitars are measured. Enough said.
The Martin D-28 plays good right out of the box. I would however prefer to put light gauge strings on this guitar. Because I like low action, I would probably lower the strings at both the nut and saddle a bit.
The detail of workmanship really shows in how this guitar is setup. Often overlooked, it is one of the most important things that should be addressed with a fine guitar, and Martin gets it right. Every time.
The Martin D-28 is very solid and well made. This guitar does not feel frail in the least bit. The top is solid and will withstand the tension from medium gauge strings very well. Please, do NOT put heavy gauge strings on this guitar.
When strumming the guitar, the sustain was really quite good for a new guitar. This demonstrates the value of having the Solid Rosewood back and sides.
This guitar was put together in a humidity controlled atmosphere and you should keep it in that same type of atmosphere to minimize cracking or wood movement. A good humidifier for your room or home and guitar case is essential to minimize repair bills.
Be sure to visit our page on Guitar Humidity Control for detail information of keeping your guitar in tip-top shape during the dry winter months.
Be sure to register your guitar. If you treat your guitar right you will be able to keep it in great playing condition for a long time. The biggest enemy of a hollow body acoustical guitar is the lack or the excess of humidity in the air. If you develop problems, a Martin repair center will take care of you.
The C.F. Martin D-28 is known as a great bluegrass flatpick guitar. It is also used considerably by folk artists, country artists and for soft rock. This is also know as a Martin D-28 Herringbone because of the herringbone purfling trim around the guitar edge, which is very striking a beautiful.
There are some major differences from today's guitars as compared to those produced some 70 years ago. The major difference is the use of scalloped bracing used for the vintage models, while the new guitars are produced using solid spruce.
This guitar was really popularized by the great bluegrass guitarist Clarence White. He modified his Martin D-28 to have a larger soundhole and also placed a new fretboard on the guitar which overshot the soundhole by about 1 fret. Now C.F. Martin has made that style guitar one of their standards.

I love this guitar so much that I've introduced an Martin-Style Dreadnought Ultimate Guitar Plan based on the Martin D-28 It will be the Dreadnought sized body, 14 fret neck, 25.4" scale, and similar brace configuration to the Martin.
