As with many of the Beatles songs, Penny Lane provides the rhythm guitarist with some challenges. If have browsed a lot of chord web sites and very very few of them provide an accurate representation of the chords for this beautiful ballad. I chose to rectify that. You fill find that this tabbed chord arrangement is very faithful to the original score of the 1967 release of this song.
The original song was recored in the key of B Major. This is not too friendly for the guitar player, so I have made my arrangement in a more guitar-friendly key of D Major. This still provides some challenges with several bar chords, but you will find it much easier to play. Also the Key of D Major is a great key for you to play the song as a solo.
Across the Universe: One arrangement that I have found that I really love is Penny Lane played by Eric Hansen on the Classical Guitar. Eric's simplisity on his Beatles songs brings out the beauty of this incredible ballads and allows you to easily follow along without doing finger gymnastics

The rhythm of Penny Lane is really quite simple. It is in 4/4 time and there is no syncopation to speak of. About the only surprise in this song is the shift from the key of D major, down 2 frets to the key of C major
Make sure to memorize your songs. What is the easiest way to do this? Unless you have perfect pitch, you will have to learn one section or measure at a time. Once you can play flawlessly move on to the next measure and add it to what you have memorized. Continue this and make sure you can play the first half of the song, including the second ending.
Once you have the first half memorized, move on to the second half, doing the same thing with the second half of the song.
