Can't Buy Me Love Tab - Chet Atkins: This portion of this lesson covers the introduction and the first part or Part A of this song. We will cover the remainder of the song in the second lesson, or Part B of Can't Buy Me Love.
Firstly, play the Intro with feeling and be sure to brush the chord forms with the thumb of your right hand. You also should hold the chord forms in place for not only the brushed chords but for the notes that follow the chords. This will make the passage sound very smooth and effortless.
For your convenience, the appropriate chord forms have been placed above the notation. Be sure to refer to these as you are forming your chords and arpeggios with your left hand.
Most of the arrangement for the Part A of Can't Buy Me Love, follows a standard alternating bass line by the using your RH thumb. Also, play the lead notes with the 1st through 3rd fingers of the RH.
Departure from the LH chord forms is inevitable, but attempt to keep some LH anchor fingers in place wherever you can. Not only will this allow you to more easily maintain your position within the song, it will allow you to smoothen out the melody. Only lift a finger of the left hand (LH) when absolutely necessary.
A special note about the F chord. You can play the F Major Chord in several different ways. The method chosen makes use of the RH thumb rather than the more typical bar chord using the RH first finger across all 6 strings. Whichever method you decide to use is completely up to you and can depend more on the action of your guitar and how easily you can play full bar chords.
As Chet typically does in his great arrangements, he uses a fair amount of syncopation within his fingerstyle methods. What is meant by this is the melody note is moved slightly before its normal location to create interest in the song. The easiest example of this is the first note in Part A of the arrangement here. Look at the last note in the 7th measure. It would normally be played as the first beat of the 8th measure, but it is moved "Backward" to form syncopation in this piece. There are several more examples of this within the arrangement of this lesson.
